Major retailers in Germany
The German retail market is dominated by low price discounters on the one hand and traditional wholesale driven chains on the other. Aldi invented the "discount system" and executed it in a thorough way noboday was able to copy. It forced other retailers in Germany to lower their prices and to control and lower their costs throughout the entire company. Lidl's concept is similar, but did not go down to the bare minimum supply in assortment, shopexecution and service. Aldi and Lidl did not only change the food retail landscape, but also competed heavily in electronics, clothing, furniture and any other sector where spectacular price competition is still possible. In general it has caused an impoverishment in the shop atmosphere and when used to the service and atmosphere of shops in the UK or France and many other countries, it does not make you a happy shopper.
