The French retail ranking is dominated by the major chains with hypermarkets selling in almost any retail sector. The hypermarkets play the leading role in the food sector, but for all other sectors specialist retailers are leading. For the hypermarkets petrol and clothing are the most successful of the non food products.
Most recent retail developments are not in the hypermarket segment but in discounting. All chains have therefore developed their own discount concepts so as to fight the successful penetration of Lidl and Aldi. France is the first country where Lidl has clearly outpaced Aldi.
