Rankings and profiles of the top retailers in France
Our database holds information on 390 French retailers and chains. These are classified into 18 sectors and are ranked by looking at their most recent turnover figures. We also include a detailed profile per individual retailer.
The crisis has affected the French economy less hard than it has other comparable economies. This success has been attributed to a more cautious banking- and investment sector and a tradition of effective state intervention. After Germany, France remains the largest country in Europe based on the nominal GDP. It has the highest number of millionaires in the old continent and is the world’s 4th wealthiest nation in aggregate household wealth.
As in most countries, the French retail sector is dominated by major multinational food chains, with hypermarkets selling in almost every area. The most important French multinational groups are Carrefour, E.Leclerc, ITM Entreprises (Les Mousquetaires), Groupe Auchan, Groupe Casino, and Système U. Carrefour remains the largest retailer in France, in spite of its continuous drop in sales since 2010.
At the right hand side of this page we present a table with the top 10 retailers for France, based on turnover value.
